Tongue Weight Sensor

The Tongue Weight Sensor is a digital or mechanical device used to measure the downward force that a food trailer’s tongue applies to the tow vehicle’s hitch. In mobile food operations, maintaining proper tongue weight is critical for safe towing. Imbalanced weight distribution can cause trailer sway, reduced steering control, brake instability, or even detachment. Tongue weight sensors help ensure the load is properly distributed by confirming that the tongue weight remains within the recommended range, typically 10 to 15 percent of the trailer’s fully loaded weight.

Use in Food Trailers

  • Safety Assurance Prevents unsafe towing conditions by verifying correct tongue weight for highway and city routes.
  • Loading Accuracy Provides immediate feedback during equipment and inventory loading to maintain proper balance.
  • Efficient Setup Speeds up pre-departure checks by confirming balance before transport, reducing the need for reloading.
  • Compliance Support Helps meet Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and insurance requirements related to trailer weight and safe towing practices.
  • Reduced Wear Minimizes stress on the hitch, frame, and tow vehicle suspension, helping extend equipment lifespan.
  • Peace of Mind Ensures mobile food vendors can travel confidently, even with frequent location changes or uneven terrain.

How to Choose the Right Tongue Weight Sensor

Select a sensor compatible with your trailer’s gross weight and hitch setup. Digital models typically offer greater precision and user-friendly displays, while mechanical versions may suit rugged or off-grid use. Ensure the sensor’s capacity exceeds your trailer’s maximum expected tongue weight, and choose a model with clear output for quick, accurate readings. Test the device before regular use to confirm reliability during travel preparations.
